Pollution Engineering and Adventus Group Recognize Future Environmental Science Leaders
Remediation biotechnology firm announces winners of the Best Student Presentation awards
ATLANTA, Georgia (March 17, 2009) - The Adventus Group, a world leader in the soil, sediment
and groundwater bioremediation industry, joined Pollution Engineering magazine to recognize emerging
environmental scientists during the 1st RemTEC09, a Remediation Technology Summit recently held in
Atlanta. Three students were awarded $500 for the best overall platform and poster presentations by
an objective Student Judging Committee.
The judging committee consisted of Dr. Pamela Dugan (Carus Corporation), Dr. Phil Block
(FMC Corporation), Roy Bigham (Pollution Engineering) and was headed up by Dr. Fayaz Lakhwala
of Adventus.
"I was very impressed with the knowledge and passion demonstrated by the student participants.
I think it shows that we have great promise for the future of this industry," said Bigham. "I
certainly look forward to working with them and their colleagues in the future."
"These impressive young environmentalists all displayed superb thought leadership and presentation
skills. Selecting the winning themes was extremely difficult, although the industry will surely be
hearing more from these students in years ahead," said Dr. Lakhwala of Adventus. "As our company
continues to develop the next generation of remediation biotechnologies, it is our privilege to
showcase the important role partnerships with the academic community and private sector organizations
can play. The Adventus Group is committed to continue sponsoring student contests around the globe,
and congratulates all the participants - especially our award winners."

This year's contest winners were:
Ms. Kelly Fletcher of Georgia Institute of Technology, for her platform presentation
on Stable Carbon Isotope Fractionation of 1,2-Dichloropropane During Degradation by Dehalococcides
Population.
Ms. Emmie Granbery of Georgia Institute of Technology, for her poster presentation
on Characterization of DNAPL Source Zone Architecture and Associated Plume Response in 2-D Aquifer
Cell Experiments.
Mr. Tanapon Phenrat of Carnegie Mellon University, for his poster presentation on Transport Characteristics of Polyelctrolyte-Modified Fe Nanoparticles at High Particle Concentration
in Sand Columns.
The evaluation factors used to rate the presentations included: Topic Selection/Innovation, Research
and Analysis Techniques Utilized, Presentation/Poster Organization and Structure, Quality of Presentation
Materials and Communication of Presentation/Poster Content. Each presentation was ranked using a
mathematical scale. Scores were tabulated by the Committee, with awards provided to three students
possessing the highest total score.
