Site Location: US EPA Region 3 Anacostia River, Washington,
D.C.
Project Status: Completed April 2004
Setting / Purpose: River, tidally influenced
(freshwater). EPA SITE Program (Superfund Innovative Technology
Evaluation). Demonstrated encapsulation of contaminated sediments, within
the context of an "active caps" designed to accomplish contaminant
treatment concurrent with encapsulation
Contaminant(s) of Concern: PAHs (polynuclear aromatic
hydrocarbons); PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls); and metals. AquaBlok Cap
Design / Site Area: Multi-layer design. Design comprised of a basal layer
of hydrated AquaBlok (~4 inches or ~10 cm in target thickness) covered by
a surficial layer of sand (~8 inches or ~20 cm in target thickness). Site
area was 745 square meters (8,000 square feet).
Method of AquaBlok Placement: Barge-based crane plus
clamshell.
