EnviroMetal Technologies Inc. (ETI), a division of the Adventus Group is the world’s leader in the design, installation (oversight) and monitoring of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) using zero valent iron (ZVI) to treat volatile organic compounds in groundwater.
It is important to properly design and install PRBs - once installed systems modifications can be costly. Lessons learned from more than 15 years experience in the design and installation of > 100 PRB systems can help identify potentially problematic issues prior to installation of a ZVI PRB.
The design and installation of a ZVI PRB can be optimized with ETI’s experience and we uniquely offer specialty sub-consultant services to provide the following:
- Assessment of the applicability of a ZVI PRB for a particular site – Over the past 15 years ETI has assessed the applicability of a ZVI PRB for over 1,500 sites under many different aquifer settings.
- Review of existing data and recommend additional data collection – Based on ETI’s experience, we can efficiently evaluate existing data and readily identify any critical data gaps that can influence system efficacy.

Independent, experienced laboratory bench-scale testing – ETI has completed over 200 laboratory bench-scale tests and we continually revise the testing procedure to optimize results. Testing programs completed by conventional treatability laboratories may not provide the data necessary to properly design a PRB.
- Hydrogeologic and geochemical modeling – Some PRB designs required a detailed modeling evaluation and ETI can either conduct the modeling or work with a clients in-house experts.
- Design assistance – Once a ZVI PRB has been selected as a remedy, ETI can work with the project team to finalize the PRB design.
- Preparation of technical specifications specifically related to the construction of a PRB – ETI has a library of specification templates specific to PRBs; we can source the most effective, cost-efficient ZVI materials.
- Assistance in selecting construction method – ETI has first-hand experience in all construction methods used to construct PRBs
- Specification/procurement/quality assurance of ZVI – Not all suppliers of ZVI are equal, and ETI has assessed numerous commercial ZVI sources in North America, Europe and South America and can effectively evaluate new potential suppliers
- Oversight and QA/QC services during field installation – Documentation of proper construction is crucial to system performance. ETI engineers have provided these services for over 15 years.
- Development of a performance monitoring program – Monitoring programs can be optimized based on ETI extensive experience.
Assistance with long-term monitoring and evaluation – ETI has evaluated data from over 50 sites.
